best practices if you connect to the campus high-speed network.
Complete the 10 steps below for a trouble-free ResNet experience!
- Connect an Ethernet cable into your wall jack, open up a Web browser and go to: http://www.residence-rooms.uiowa.edu Follow the instructions to initialize your jack.
- Turn on the automatic update feature in your PC or Mac computer. For more information, go to:http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/security/updates
- Activate the built-in firewall on your computer. For more information on how to activate it, go to: http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/firewall
- Install, update and run Symantec Antivirus (SAV). This program is available for free to students. For a complete guide to antivirus information, go to: http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/virus
- Install, update and run anti-spyware software regularly on your computer. Spyware usually causes interference with your computer’s performance. For more information, go to: http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/security/spyware
- If you install a wireless device in your room it must be set up securely. You’re responsible for all network activity from your jack. For more specifics, click here and to access the Wireless Support Center go to this link: :http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/wireless
- Avoid free music and movie sharing because:
a. Your jack will be shut off if you go over your network activity quota.
b. The music industry is cracking down on piracy and is issuing lawsuits for copyright infringement.
c. They’re full of nasty, infected files that will wreck your computer!
