NSC-050812a: Veritas Backup Exec - port 10000 block
Complications have come up within some units using Veritas Backup Exec, that
are preventing the timely implementation of host-based filters (IPSec
or firewall) to block port 10000. For that reason, a TEMPORARY block of
inbound (to the campus, including hospital) TCP port 10000 connections is
being implemented for one week.
This block will be removed next Thursday, August 18. If this block presents
other un-anticipated problems, it may be removed before that time, on Monday
or Tuesday. (A notice will be sent out to that effect if it becomes
necessary.) This temporary measure provides sufficient time for system
administrators to get host-based filters applied (and servers recycled), on
all systems that use Veritas Backup Exec.
Please contact the Security Office if you have any questions or if this
temporary measure causes a problem. (email security@uiowa.edu, call
335-6332, or after hours call 384-HELP and follow the emergency instructions
to ask to have the security on-call person paged).
