NSC-051012: CRITICAL New Microsoft Patches

Yesterday, 11 October 2005 Microsoft released 9 security updates for newly discovered vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows.

Summaries for these new bulletins may be found at the following page:

- Windows Security Updates for October 2005 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-oct.mspx

One of these patches (MS05-51) is critical for Windows 2000 users to apply immediately. We have been informed by Microsoft that there is an excellent probability that an exploit already exists and may be spreading in the wild.  We have been told that this exploit will require no user intervention.

Failure to patch affected systems will likely result in those machines becoming compromised and disconnected from the campus network.  Departments should follow their system administration procedures to get these patches applied to all machines running Microsoft Windows.  These patches will require a reboot after they are installed so all data should be saved before starting the install of the patches.  If you have questions or need assistance please contact the IT Security Office.
